What’s the difference between waterproof and water-resistant flooring?

Waterproof Flooring – Total Peace of Mind

Waterproof flooring means that no water will penetrate the surface or the core of the flooring, no matter how long it sits there. It can be mopped, soaked, and splashed on without damage. Perfect for:

• Bathrooms
• Kitchens
• Utility rooms
• Homes with kids and pets

Examples include:

• SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)
• Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)
• Some click vinyl flooring options

One of our customers recently redid her kitchen with SPC click flooring after her toddler poured an entire bottle of juice on her old laminate. The SPC didn’t bat an eyelid—easy clean-up and not a single plank lifted. Honestly, game-changer!

 
Water-Resistant Flooring – Some Protection, But Be Cautious

Water-resistant flooring can handle splashes and spills—but only for a short time. If water is left to sit, it can seep into the joints or under the boards, causing swelling, warping, or discolouration. Ideal for:

• Living rooms
• Hallways
• Bedrooms
• Dining areas

Examples include:

• Most laminate flooring
• Some engineered wood flooring
• Water-resistant laminates (often treated for extra protection)

I always tell customers: water-resistant is fine for everyday family life (we’ve got it in our lounge), but it’s not suitable for the bathroom where bath time turns into a tidal wave!
