Laminate Wood Flooring Maintenance Guide

Keep Your Floor In Top Condition With Our Laminate Floor Maintenance Guide

The goal of any new floor is to keep it looking as good as new for as long as possible. If looked after properly, laminate flooring can last a number of years. Our maintenance guide will ensure that you’re getting the most out of your laminate floor and make sure that it’s being maintained correctly so that it doesn’t become damaged.

Cleaning Supplies

Before cleaning your laminate floor, it’s important to double-check that you have the right equipment for the job. The basics you will need to clean your laminate floor are:

  • A damp mop
  • Broom with soft bristles
  • Vacuum
  • Dry Cloths
  • Laminate-friendly detergent/cleaning products (check your manufacturer guide to see what type of cleaning products you can use)

Cleaning and Maintenance

Day-to-Day Maintenance

For the everyday maintenance of your laminate floors, there’s very little you need to do. All it needs is a quick vacuum using the brush head attachment to remove dust and debris, and an occasional brushing when dirt gets on your floor.

Deep Clean

When it comes to the deep clean of your floor there are a few things to consider. For example, laminate floors are not waterproof. So, ensure that you’re only using a damp mop when mopping your floor as excess water can cause your floor to warp and lose shape.

Avoid using cleaning items such as scouring pads/scrubbing pads as these can scratch your floor. Instead, use a cloth or a soft-bristled brush to help shift the dirt without damaging your floor.

* Update * Wine Spills

Wine can cause absolute havoc when it comes to furniture and flooring, especially the dreaded red wine stains! Don't worry though, laminate and lacquered engineered wood flooring can quickly and easily be saved if you do have a wine-based mishap.

Simply blot the area with a damp cloth, removing as much excess as quickly as possible. However, if your spillage is a little bigger, or, for whatever reason you've left your spill a bit longer than hoped, Murphy Oil & Soap recommends using a natural mix of salt and soda, or cider vinegar.

Protecting Your Laminate Floors

Doormats and Rugs

Place doormats near all exterior exits as they will help to stop any dirt or water from coming into contact with your floor. A rug can also help prevent dirt and debris from coming into contact with your floor as well as adding to the décor of your home!

Furniture Felt Protectors

Using felt furniture pads will further help to protect your floor from scratching and denting. If furniture is moved around, your floor can become damaged however, if you have felt furniture pads on the bottom of your furniture then this will help decrease the risk of scratches to your laminate floor.  We also recommend picking up your furniture to move it even if you do have furniture pads to further ensure that no damage will come to your laminate floor.

Dirt and Spillages

As laminate floors are not waterproof, spillages need to be cleaned up with a dry cloth immediately to avoid the risk of damage to your floor. If dirt is left on your floor for long periods of time it can cause a build-up which is why we advise regularly sweeping or vacuuming your laminate floor, so all dirt is removed regularly.

No shoes!

A laminate floors worst enemy is a pointy stiletto! Shoes can cause scratching and denting to your floor so to protect your floors ask your guests to politely take their shoes off before coming into your home. This will reduce the risk of scratching/denting but also reduce the risk of excess dirt coming into your home.

Pets

If you have pets, then you may need to brush and vacuum the floor a couple more times during the week to ensure that any excess pet hairs and dirt that they may bring into the home from outside are cleaned up. We also recommend keeping your pets' nails trimmed to avoid your laminate becoming scratched or dented.
