What is a wear layer?

A wear layer is the top protective layer on flooring, designed to withstand daily wear and tear. It is most commonly found on engineered wood, laminate, and luxury vinyl flooring (LVT).

The thickness of the wear layer plays a big role in the floor’s durability—thicker layers offer better protection against scratches, scuffs, and stains, making them ideal for busy households with kids and pets.

For engineered wood, the wear layer is the real wood veneer on top, which can be sanded and refinished depending on its thickness. For laminate and LVT, the wear layer is a clear protective coating that helps resist damage.

If you're choosing flooring for a high-traffic area, a thicker wear layer is a great investment to keep your floors looking beautiful for years to come!
