How do I install click-lock flooring myself?

Installing click-lock flooring yourself can be a straightforward and satisfying project, even for DIY beginners. This type of flooring is engineered with special interlocking edges that "click" together—no glue, nails, or heavy tools needed.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  1. Prepare Your Subfloor: Make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Remove any old flooring if needed.
  2. Lay Underlay: If your click-lock flooring requires underlay, roll it out and trim it to size. This adds cushioning and soundproofing.
  3. Plan Your Layout: Start from one corner of the room, typically the left-hand side. Lay out a few planks to visualise the pattern and avoid tiny cuts at the edges.
  4. Click the Planks Together: Begin with the first row, clicking each plank’s long side into the next. For the second row, angle the short side of the plank into the previous row and press down until it locks.
  5. Stagger the Joints: Make sure the joints between planks are staggered from row to row to create a stable and natural-looking finish.
  6. Cut to Fit: Use a saw to trim planks around door frames and walls. Remember to leave an expansion gap (usually 10mm) around the edges.
  7. Finishing Touches: Once the floor is fully laid, fit your skirting boards or beading to cover the expansion gap.

Top Tip:
Take your time during the planning and first few rows—once you’ve got the hang of it, the rest goes quickly!
