How do I fix a creaky floor?

Creaky floors are often caused by movement between floorboards or between the flooring and the subfloor. The first step is to identify the source of the noise—is it the flooring itself, or the subfloor beneath?

Common Solutions:

Check for loose boards: If you have access underneath (like in a suspended floor), you can secure the boards with screws from below.
Use flooring repair kits: These often include filler or glue to stop movement between tongue-and-groove boards.
Apply talcum powder or graphite: For floating floors like laminate, sprinkling a small amount between boards can reduce friction and silence minor squeaks.
Add support: If the subfloor is uneven or sagging, reinforcing it may be needed—this often requires professional help.

When to Call a Pro:
If the floor continues to creak despite basic fixes, or if it’s a structural issue (like a damaged subfloor), it’s best to consult a flooring installer or carpenter.

Regular creaks can be a simple annoyance or a sign of wear. Addressing them early can prevent bigger problems down the line.
