Does thicker flooring mean better quality?

Not always—but it can be a good sign! Let me explain…

Thicker flooring often feels more solid and luxurious underfoot. It tends to:

  • Reduce noise (especially with active kids or clattery paws!)
  • Handle uneven subfloors better
  • Offer improved impact resistance (great for high-traffic areas)

But here’s the catch: quality isn’t just about thickness. For laminate, the core density and top wear layer are just as important. For engineered wood, the thickness of the top veneer (the real wood layer) matters more than the overall board.

When does thickness matter most?

  • Laminate flooring: 8mm–12mm is ideal for busy households
  • Engineered wood: Look for a wear layer of 3mm+ if you want the option to sand
  • LVT flooring: Thicker planks (5mm–6.5mm) add durability and warmth

Tip:
Use thickness as a guide—but don’t forget to check other specs like wear layer, click system quality, and compatibility with underlay or underfloor heating. The right combination gives you that “just right” feel we all want!
