Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?

Engineered wood flooring is made up of a real wood veneer on top of a plywood core. The thickness of that top layer determines whether it can be sanded. If the wear layer is 3mm or more, you can sand and refinish it, usually 1–2 times over its lifespan.

This is perfect if you want to freshen up tired floors or remove small scratches and scuffs. However, flooring with a thinner veneer (under 3mm) shouldn’t be sanded, as you risk exposing the core and damaging the look.

Always check your flooring specs before sanding, and if in doubt, ask a professional. Done right, it’s a fantastic way to extend the life of your beautiful engineered floor.
